Cloning in Missouri

Now that Missourians have passed Amendment 2, I decided that I would comment on the controversy.

It is true that article (1) states "No person may clone or attempt to clone a human being," but Missourians, in there general foolishness, did not stop and ask, "what do they mean by cloning?" I mean, it was written by lawyers in favor of the bill, and we all know how lawyers are.

However, if some would have read down the amendment, which I am sure that a few have, they would find definition (2), "Clone or attempt to clone a human being" means to implant in a uterus or attempt to implant in a uterus anything other than the product of fertilization of an egg of a human female by a sperm of a human male for the purpose of initiating a pregnancy that could result in the creation of a human fetus, or the birth of a human being.

Now, it seems as though they have covered everything, but... Does anyone else see a MAJOR presupposition here? They are assuming that life does not begin at conception, much like the abortion debate (see my blog on the nature of the fetus). I don't know a single living person who hasn't been in the conceptus stage.

So cloning is only cloning if a human pregnancy and birth result, according to Missourians. That is quite an assumption and a disregard for what is a potential living person.

Further, if anyone looked up the procedure, they would realize that it was the same one used to clone sheep in the past. DNA is implanted into an egg and the egg takes on the form of the DNA. So, why do we call the sheep clones and not the embryos?

Beyond the cloning debate, is the other issue, stem cell research. First, anyone that voted democrat because, "the republicans don't want to help people," is foolish. Everybody, is concerned about the well being of cancer victims. The question was never asked, "Why are the conservatives against the stem cell bill?" Two main reasons; (1) There is reason to believe that life begins at conception, inside or outside of the womb, and (2) the bill was legalizing Embryonic stem cell research, which has yet to produce one cure, or even come close for that matter. All of the results of stem cell research have been via adult stem cell research, which republicans and conservatives are all for. Further, the attempts at cures using embryonic stem cells have produced adverse affects, such as fingernail material growing in a person's brain. That doesn't sound like a cure.

In the end, as Missourians have been lied to. They, one day, will see, this Amendment is just a big money grab. It is a back door where people can make a lot of money doing nothing, a typical governmental project. Where does this money come from? Thankfully not my pocket anymore, but Missourians are paying for it.

  1. Have you heard about the Missouri Cures Without Cloning initiative trying to get a real ban on human cloning put on the 2008 ballot?
